  • Comox Valley

The first thing that strikes anyone about the North Island is the wilderness. The magnificent views of forest, mountains, glaciers, and coastline seem endless.

Comox Valley is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the K’ómoks First Nation.

Wild beaches, sweeping forests, and pastoral serenity are all cast against the majesty of a rugged mountain backdrop in the Comox Valley. It’s easy to succumb to the endless beauty of the valley, but what may be overlooked is the abundance of recreation, culture, cuisine, and harmony of community. This tri-town community of Comox, Courtenay, and Cumberland is situated on the eastern coast of the central region of the island, the valley is home to wilds that jostle to be noticed alongside any of Vancouver Island’s destinations of note.

Aside from time spent on the links or in the clubhouse, there’s a variety of sights to enjoy. Admire bald eagle nests high in Douglas firs that spill onto wild beaches, which in turn overlook orca migration routes. Marvel at the towering Comox glacier, visible from any number of vantage points. Kick your adrenaline up a notch with world-class mountain biking trails, or slow down with a wander through delightful shopping and recreation centres. With Mt Washington a mere thirty minute drive from downtown Courtenay, there’s also the island’s premier alpine resort to explore.

Unwind and feed the senses by soaking in the luxury of spas and welcoming hotels. Agriculture and fishing help colour this region, best sampled by way of heavenly farm-to-table or ocean-to-mouth cuisine, paired with local spirits, ciders, and wines. Alternatively, discover delicious local fare through the many vendors of the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market, which runs year-long and entices many. A cultural tapestry is woven through geological and human history, centuries of vivid First Nations heritage, and subsequent European settlement, bring us to the present day. Find out more by visiting the many museums and galleries which illustrate and celebrate the Comox Valley’s story.

Perhaps the best way to appreciate the natural bounty of the Comox Valley is through a round at one of its six golf courses, always with an awe inspiring view to drink in. With a number of courses that operate
year-round and wistful vistas delighting sight and sense, there’s no excuse not to book during shoulder seasons. And when the weather is against you, there’s plenty of distraction away from the golf.

    Courtenay

Downtown Courtenay offers a worthy distraction away from the green. Quaint 5th street is the fulcrum which, alongside 4th and 6th street, offers independent businesses. Find retailers that support Canadian artisans, such as the delicate boutique Artifact. While away an afternoon in art studios and galleries, or amble along walking trails that straddle rivers or estuary. For a lunch or evening sampling authentic tastes of local fare seek out Local’s Restaurant, where a delectable seasonal menu illustrates the Comox
Valley’s palate of coast-meets-farm. If lazy mornings that lean into lunchtime are more your thing, Off Main serves up appetizing creations for brunch, lunch, and cocktails made with seasonal ingredients sourced locally.

    Crown Isle Resort

The platinum rated Crown Isle Resort is a large 18 hole course that’s beautifully inset
between tall fir trees and tasteful residential neighbourhoods. This prestigious course gives spectacular views westerly of the Beaufort mountain range. As the valley’s only golf resort, there’s luxurious villas to bed down in. Although generally forgiving, consisting of mellow fairways and rolling greens, there are challenges to test hardened golfers. Notably, this course features on the PGA tour, and offers a sizable clubhouse to
    really soak in the tranquility.

    Mulligans Golf Course

Mulligans Golf Course is flanked by farmland and gives exceptional close up views of the island’s mountains. This course is a friendly compact round of 9 holes which welcomes families and avid golfers alike, it is a course of unique challenges. Whilst less than 3 km’s north of Mulligans sits Sunnydale Golf & Country Club. Sunnydale has lofty vistas of the mountains that are typical of the valley’s lower reaches, its 18 holes take in a mixture of difficulty with largely flat greens. Further north still, near wide tidal beaches
are the 9 holes of Saratoga Golf Club. Find an idyllic family friendly course in a coastal
location, with a chance to see roaming wildlife up close.

    Comox

Water surrounds Comox from three sides so there’s plentiful aquatic recreation. Goose Spit Park and beach provides a wonderful locale for paddle sports, whilst the centrally located Comox Marina is a hive of activity for sailing, with many community events taking place here. Grabbing a slice from the always delicious Boonies Pizza is a must. Ensure to allot time to admire the splendor and traditions of the K’ómoks First Nation through galleries and exhibits. If time allows, a short drive brings you to the adventure grounds of Cumberland, where it’s easy to locate aprés bites and locally brewed beer. Enjoy entirely independent businesses, and breathe in the crisp mountain air of this old mining town.

    Comox Golf Club

Comox Golf Club was established in 1928 and offers grandeur views of the snow caps amongst its fairways and firs. The club has a unique location – just a 5 minute walk to Comox Marina. Its 9 holes and compact course are for any level, and it’s welcoming of
    families.

    Glacier Greens

Glacier Greens is an 18 hole championship course that provides a fun yet testing round. Benefit from excellent access to nearby Comox Valley Airport and a BC Ferries terminal. This walkable course has challenging undulating features. The views of both the mainland’s mountains and Comox glacier are reason enough to enjoy an afternoon here. Mind for wandering deer on the course.

This (Bear Mountain Resort – Mountain Course, on the Vancouver Island Golf Trail) is my new favourite golf course – I just love the layout. It’s really one of the prettiest golf courses I’ve played in my life, I’ll come back here on vacation, it’s that good.

    Scott McCarron, PGA TOUR Champion

I always treat golf courses as how many poor holes there are. This (Bear Mountain Resort – Mountain Course, on the Vancouver Island Golf Trail) is a very good one. There’s not one poor hole on this golf course.

    Colin Montgomerie, PGA TOUR Champion
