Cowichan Golf and Country Club

Cowichan Golf and Country Club is one of those courses that golfers always dream about discovering when they go away on a golf trip. It has all the right ingredients for a terrific day of golf and beautiful scenery, challenging holes, excellent service, and a great club-house. Located outside of Duncan, half way between Victoria and Nanaimo, the course looks out to the mountains and the waters of Cowichan Bay. Established at its present location in 1947, when legendary architect A.V. Macan designed one of the Island’s finest nine-hole courses, Cowichan expanded to eighteen holes in 1985.

The site of a number of top national and provincial championships, the course now meanders through the valley, a picturesque mix of meadow and tree-lined holes. At 6,189 yards, Cowichan isn’t particularly long from the tips, but don’t let that fool you into a sense of complacency as the tight fairways and fast, undulating greens will come to haunt you.

A good example is the tenth. The par four is a dogleg left. Trees block out the green, so the play is a sensible iron shot off the tee. The approach is downhill into a slick green that is bounded by bunkers front, left, and at the back. Remember to spin it on the green, but keep the ball beneath the hole.

Cowichan’s best-known hole is the eleventh, and it’s probably the toughest par four on the entire Island. The 404-yarder kicks off with an intimidating tee shot. Off the drive, players have to clear a ravine, stay away from the out-of-bounds zone that runs along the left side of the fairway, and stay away from the big trees that dot the right edge of the hole. The approach is even more complicated. The elevated green is protected by a wide gully and water on the front and left sides. It’s just another memorable hole on a memorable course.
